This has been in the works for a few months now.
Needed details have came together.
I posted this in the general discussion thread because I feel this section gets the most views.
Because we as a CLUB have taken on the responsibility to help host the pre warm up party at this years 40th "Nationals" I feel that this and maybe some other threads on what we are doing and the needed help should be seen where all of the members, even the occasional visitor can see it.
There has been a good bit of planning and behind the scenes work done so far.
We are scheduled to start the pre warm up party for the nationals on Monday morning July 9th 10am.
Jim Weaver has volunteered his house as a centrally located meeting place on Saturday July the 7th.
Jim's house is located at 9471 Briar Dr.Streetsboro Ohio.44241.
There is room to park vans at his place.Jim has also went as far as asking a couple of neighbors permission to park vans at there houses if we need the space.
There is also dinner in the works for Saturday night.
We will leave Jim's house on Sunday morning for the fair grounds in Elkhorn Wi.

I plan on leaving my house in Joppa Md on Saturday morning.Any body who is close to me is more than welcome to follow me out to Ohio.

I am pretty sure we also have members coming from the south and the west It would be nice as soon as plans are in place to post your travel plans and routes to help to coordinate these routes to this event.
Things are really starting to take shape in this club venture.

our plan right now is to be at jim and bevs in streetsboro saturday night. with any luck we'll hope to be able to provide some good vittiles for that evening too. we hope to be able to rendesvous with members such as mike donahue, ron bonomo, frank costa, wally gator and anyone else heading west from the east coast. of course we'll firm up plans as the date draws nearer, but it makes good sense to start now. good call joe.

Make sure you bring lots of change and dollar bills (or an Ipass or E-Z pass) for the toll road on the route around Chicago! Have fun but be safe, even that route is a very busy area.

Wookee
03-01-2012, 03:31 PM
I will have my EZ Pass with me on this trip. Most of the first leg of my trip will be the Pa Turnpike.
I will pay the tolls to avoid the long mountain pulls going a more southern route.
I am also sure we will have a pre trip meeting before we leave Weavers place and have the best route figured out.

It would be cool to caravan all together with a bunch of Earlies. However if you live closer or want to get there earlier, I will be there starting Friday morning. The week before Nats is Summer fest in Milwaukee!! It is the biggest fest in the Midwest. It ends Sunday July 8th. It is only 30-40 minutes from the Nats. Here is the link. http://www.summerfest.com/
Let me know if there is anything you need or I can help with.

We're beginning to put together our South-North caravan. If the East-West caravan is planning to circumvent Chicago, what about coming west to Hwy 47?

We could schedule to have South-North to meet up around Morris, IL and cruise the last couple hours together.

I truly think that CB's would be just the ticket for "Safety" in a convoy!!!! Everyone monitoring a club frequency,ie. Ch. #2 and maybe some on the front Ch.# 19. Years back, running to New York we just about had a disaster, when the freeway was dead stopped. I heard, "BRAKE 'EM DOWN!" and we had guys going both into the medium and across the road trying to avert running into each other!!!!!!!! The CB's saved our A$$$'s! Another thing to keep in mind, is the distance between each other! Our old gals don't have the braking distance, unless you are running modern discs! Another thing to note is......a club from Michigan got caught in my county running to close to each other and got fined several hundred $$$$ as well! Just a thought to keep in mind along with the planning of this long distance run! :)

Wookee
04-16-2012, 11:49 AM
When I used to run in convoys all of the time I always had a CB in my van. They saved our butts more than once
Since I have been back to vanning most of the time I am traveling by my self.
It is way easier to talk on a CB and drive than to use a phone.......my phone at least.......LOL....cellphonaasuarurus........

With a major up grade like the one you just did there are a good bit of things that need to be buttoned up and sorted out.
one you get it so she is dependable/reliable. Then a long road trip is in order.
Just like a woman the new engine is talking to you.understanding its language and needs is the next step.
I can't wait to hear it talk a little smack my self......

Take Rat Trap Karen for a ride to Summit Station,(where Keystone was held at) just for ha ha's.
Nice day trip.
When you get back you will know exactly what needs to be addressed.

thats too bad pap but I definitely understand. it's nerve racking driving these old girls even after you've gotten all the bugs worked out.

got the van set up properly for sleeping finally! rode my bike home and spent the weekend building a bed. so so so sick of sleeping on an air mattress.
now I can park it at Weave's house and sleep in it without un-packing!

i missed a few events for same reason. days are flying by quicker than i am getting stuff done. my biggest concern was very low oil preasure but put in bearings and pump last night. if no problems by then, i am trusting it for nats run. if it blows up, i have a stock 250 settin in garage with 10k miles after rebuild. i have dozens of minor things i want to do before nats but none of them will keep me from coming. heres my pit crew getting her ready4110

The wife and I where just talking about our sleeping situation.
I have the bed in the Beast set up so it unfolds and a queen size air mattress fit in the bed area.
Unfortunately for the Nationals the van is full of stuff. With me the wife and two fur babies, along with a weeks worth of camping stuff. My van is full.

So it looks like at Weavers we will be sleeping in out in the easy up tent on the air mattress. To keep from unloading the van.
Glad to see my van is not the only one up on stands this close to the event.........LOL

makes me nervous with mechanical issues so close to trip. it is being used as my daily driver so if i screwed up anything with bearings, i should know soon enough!

I feel like you are not a true Vanner if you aren't wrenching and trying to fix/build things right up until days before a van run haha. it never fails, always cramming tons of work into a few days before. I still need to change the oil, put in the CB and my heater core shut off valve. I'm sure us 3 aren't the only ones scrambling to get these girls right, before the crazy long trek to WI. which reminds me, I better get Vanna black inspected too. add it to the list I guess.
Leaving in 12 days!

Ok, it looks like we will be on our own for the South-North journey. If I'd taken the advice of all those 'round these parts I've talked to about making the trip, I wouldn't have ever dared making it to a Nats with a van full of nails where cotter pins should be and only-Mac-knows whatever else I should have been wary of. Surely I would have been stranded and eaten by wolves, and eternally broke from cashing in my 401k for gas money.

In any event and consequences be damned, we'll be on our way to the Nats on Saturday. This will be a paltry 16-17 trip spread over two apparently grueling days of hell and high prices! It will be my fourth such death-defying effort, Speed and Amie's second, and Rick's first cavalier disregard for safety and finances.

With that said, I know we'd spoken previously about the East-West meeting up with the South-North in Morris, IL to caravan the remaining few hours together. In light of the lightness of our caravan, I suggest the the East-West disregard the previous Morris meetup in favor of a more direct route. Driving through Morris would add a touch over an hour to the East-West's most direct route (which does figure driving through Chicago). There's no sense in having a string of vans drive out of the way just to meet up with one.

I get off at 6am Saturday. We're leaving when I get off in hopes of hitting Memphis by afternoon. With the temps being over 100 by that time, we're gonna let me sleep in Memphis and start the 2nd leg about midnight. I'll be ready to drive and the air will be more van-friendly.

We'll start playing phone tag with you guys after breakfast on Sunday to jive on a meetup time.
