    Cleaned out the Doghouse...

Spent a few hours this AM scrapping out all the old fiberglass insulation and tar like cruddy adhesive, now what to replace it with?, is that Dynamat stuff able to handle the high temps in the "house", last thing I want is a fire.

No problem with adhesion or peeling?

do it once, do it right, and you will never have to do it again! while the lid is off, sandblast the whole thing, prime it with self-etching primer and paint it. you will never have a problem again if you do it like that. if you can't sandblast it yourself, have it done professinoally. it isn't all that expensive and the results are forever. good luck! pv

That's the plan, I have a local soda blaster guy who's pretty reasonable, just had to remove the majority of the hardened crud. Thanks

I simply used a carbide hand scraper and then washed it out. I used this stuff I found on eBay, super sticky high temp adhesive and plenty of material for less $$ than Dynamat. This deal gives enough for the lid and sides too.

Came out real nice and definitely shields the noise and heat. I used some high temp foil duct tape for the edges and seams (home depot). I also found some perfect 1/2" hollow D gasket for the seal on eBay that works great. here:

I had a fire with that old stuff back in the day in my '66 when it backfired through the air cleaner, no fun, I had to jump out while it was moving and it crashed and burned, end of that van!

Thanks for that tip, just bought the last one according to the listing, looks like it should ift the bill....found a doghouse seal in Restoration Specialties that is the exact size as what was on the lid and I assume was the original.

The kind I used had a sticky back and PV is right clean as good as poss. and paint. It will stick better to paint than bare metal

Thanks, I was wondering if it would stick better to painted or bare metal, its at the blasters now, got some hi-temp primer ready for when it returns..

I had a bid carb fire about a month ago. Do you have any preference on the insulation that you looked at?

Pete found some REALLY good stuff a while back that he put in his DH and it was really inexpensive. I posted on the "Born to Van" facebook group asking him what it was. Will post the link when he shares it.

This is the stuff that Pete used and has seen a HUGE difference... Just another option for those that want to try.
