How to remove a van from a motor.

Its not easy. Yanked out, or rather dropped out the 6 banger this am. Going back in with a fresh 350.

Please be careful under there! What's holding the van up? Just the cherry picker? Yikes. I'm not sure how comfortable I would be getting under there like that.

IMHO its easy enough (and maybe much safer?) to pull an engine through the doors. I've swapped so many engines in these old vans I've lost count now.

    Here's my technique:

I was pulling the engine and tranny together so I took it out the bottom.
got the engine out and on the floor with a MC/ATV jack without picking up the van. Then picked up the van with the cherry picker to roll it out. never got anything but a forearm under it while it was off the ground.

I find this way much faster but you allways need to consider saftey no matter which way you choose. I'm with KK in "please be carefull" We don't want to read about a vanner getting hurt working on an early.

I've always gone through the doors simply because I have no way to get the van up high enough to go out from underneath.

If you have access to a lift out the bottom is the way to go. I've done them both ways

I could have gotten a lift a few years back, but I have only a foot of vertical clearance in my garage!

I had a lift in front of the shop for years, kinda sucked in the winter but beats laying on your back. I built another 2 bays off the back of my shop and put a 4 post lift and a 2 post , best money I ever spent
