when extending the 4 wires to the power steering control unit, make sure that they are secure
and do not have any effect on the operation of the power assist unit when moving the harness around
with it powered up and working. if you can get your power unit to malfunction while powered up by
wiggling the harness you need to get to the bottom of it and make repairs to the harness.
Mine had a connection issue on one of the 4 small wires, and last night on the way home from work
the power steering unit went into full power assist to the right and forced me off the road into a culvert
and final resting against a couple of trees, this full power to the right occurred right after I hit a fair
size pot hole, my van is fixable but it will take all winter, I am ok, with some stiffness in my back.
If I had repaired the extension connection, this would not have happened. Hind sight 20/20.
and sunday I was coming home from a truck in with a 2800 lb pop up in tow with this vehicle, glad it happened
yesterday instead of sunday.

It's things like this that make me prefer the stock 'Armstrong' steering.

Wow, glad your alright after your 4 wheel drive tour. That conversion has been in the back of my mind since you guys first posted it, that scary! Maybe it should stay in the back of my head! Once again glad your alright!

wow that's scary I have a few of these in my buddies rigs. What caused the failure? Maybe a toggle switch in the main wire, just in case.

when I extended the 4 little wires to the controller after I removed it
from the ps unit, one of my connections is probably to blame for the issue.
The system had been behaving rather strange, and I though it might need
some attention, but just kept putting it off. If I had just repaired the issue
this would not have happened.
The only reason I put this out there was to warn anyone else who uses this
system that if they witness any unusual behavior from their power steering
to get to the bottom of it right away, and that it does have the power to do
just what mine did to me. what I should have done was turn off the power assist
at the adjustment pot until I got the system repaired, but I never thought that it
would have the power to turn that far one way with that much power, I could not
stop the rotation of the steering wheel to change direction, all I had left was the
brakes, and I locked them up but I was in the grass by then, so I didn`t slow down
much till I hit the trees.
I do not blame the ps unit for what happened, I blame the installer. Just should have fixed it!!!!!

Wow, that could have been so much worse....

When I had my HHR, I swapped the steering wheel out for one with radio controls, I did not get the sensor ring in quite the right position and when I started the car up the steering wheel swung wildly back and forth through about 90 degrees of travel, scary as hell sitting in the driveway. I can't imagine what that would be like going down the road and have the vehicle decide 'Right turn.... NOW!'

Man I'm glad your okay! I'm sorry to hear that happened! At least all you have to worry about is fixing the small amount of damage on the van and not the damage to yourself!

Hey panelmanrd, I've got a nearly perfect whole front nose on this '67 I've been using for parts if you thought you needed fixing patches.... I could sell you the whole nose or van for that matter if you thought it would help. Here are some pics....

I install aftermarket steering systems at work all the time

Can't stress enough how important wire connections and proper wire routing and protection is

Glad you are OK

Is that 2 sections of deluxe trim on the side doors? If so, I'm interested if they are in good shape.

I should be at that van tomorrow. I'll take pictures of those trim pieces so you can see them.

mine had a connection issue that caused the power assist to jerk when you were just
sitting still while wiggling the little 4 wire extension to the controller, if yours jerks while
wiggling this harness fix it now or turn off the power assist until you can make repairs.
don`t want to see another van looking like mine because of procrastination, and that is
just what caused mine!!!!!!!!

Hey panelmanrd did you get my PM's? I got an email saying you had pm'd me back, but it's the same message you initially sent me asking me what I wanted for the '67. So if you had sent another message I didn't get it for some reason.

Cool man! I pm'd you the address you'll want to arrive at. I'll be there with bells on, just let me know what you think your ETA will be. Oh and the van is a 5 lugger. I'll try to inflate the tires tomorrow when I'm pulling the saginaw out, but you might bring an extra tire if I can't get that one to cooperate. Overall the van has a lot of good sheet metal to it. I hope it'll get you back on the road pronto.

Hey RAY68108, since it's soon to be panelmanrd's van, and he probably could use the money he could make off those trim pieces to restore his van to it's former glory, I'll leave it up to him as to whether he wants to sell them or not.

Works perfect for me! I'll just be hanging out in one of my favorite coffee shops nearby, which I certainly don't mind at all. I could stay there all day long! The van is stored over by a wealthier neighborhood, and the pretty women that pull up in their BMWs to get their morning ultra skinny chic lattes after their 10 mile morning jog are to die for! Lol
