Its been 20 years, but when I was traveling, I would stop and camp in the woods just above town in Ashland, OR. I think it was called Siskiyou mountain park. Not sure if they still allow camping, but back in the day it was allowed, and I spent several nights camping there.

If you take the route closer to the coast there are lots of camping spots, One of our favorite spots is Morro Bay, lots to do and see around there.

Ashland
I'm right over the border in Ashland. Lots of pretty close camping. A K.O.A and a lake campground just 3 miles off I5 and near my shop my. let me know when you are coming through and I'll buy you a pint ( brewery 100 yds for my shop I'd love to see another vintage van. Not many around here.
