View Full Version : Altered States the show van

03-30-2007, 06:15 PM
in 2000 -i moved into a new neighborhood and noticed
directly up the street in the back yard collecting age
was a van... a van than looks like my 65 chevy van i was driving at the time..but differant... ALOT differant
and i for a long time watch the van sit in the same place for a couple years, and then 2002
always saying i should ask if they wanna sell it
,always short on cash , on some payday i was on my way by and saw an older lady poking around the yard to i pulled over and asked what was up with the old van?
she said it was her sons and she would pass him my number
and expressed she would love to have it out of her yard
in a disaproving parental way
-anyway.. a short time later i got a call from a guy named
Ken Akerly , he built and owned the van, told me all about
how he used to cruise the country to a long long list of van shows and events, was pretty much sucked into his new home
new multi bay garage and bays full of projects, hot rods and motorcycles... a great big playground to me..
but he said he would sell the van for 3 grand...
a fortune to me at the time, i could only pass the info along
and try and find it a good home
in short order.. i was contacted by a fella names Eric
(aint that ironic) anyway he wanted it and said he was on a plane in a week to get it
..thats what he did.. Ken filled the tank, changed 2 tires and the oil, and Eric got to drive it home all the way to Chicago
from Connecticut for 3,000 bucks!
to name a few of the mods ken did to the van
there was as it was known last in 2002-
altered states"-1969 chevy-"90"
with a 350/400 turbo tranny/posi rear
/dual exaust
/MARBLE floor!
/gull wing door
w/electric latch
/shaved rear doors w/picture window from a pinto
/flip up hand made chrome grille
/shaved door handles(locks operate the doors)
/front ground effect(scoop) all metal
/modified belly pan
/chrysler radiator/with electric fan+engine flex fan
/cragar chrome rims/
power booster'd original brakes
/ladder bars/custom hitch
/custom gas tank
/and a Siren
an amazing list on any van!
well guess what... thanks to a fellow vanner and an email or two
he contacted me and
says it's name now is "tattoo machine"
because he says there is a baby on the way and wants to SELL IT !
and that it has been on his front lawn for sale for the last 2 days, and was glad i contacted him again because he hopes i can find it it's next good home ..some 5 years later!
amazing... i'm still broke... and here it is again
i asked for pics, and the price...
well i hope we find this van a good home
-Eric is a nice guy, a tattoo artist and father to be
-last i saw of the van was some bad photocopys of some really bad pics of it in B&W , hope he took better ones
anyone in or near chicago would like to check it out or get pics let me know
just an update on another one of them vans that made big big impressions everywhere it went
i can't find any pics here of it..i'll have to do some digging for some old pic disks here for it

i just talked to him on the phone
i asked how much he said he has put about 11k
into it in the past 5 years, and didn't expect to come even close to asking for that much..and then asked me what would work for me..... man i wish but everything i got
has gone into the magazine, even put my chop aside for now
to have it back home in ct would be a dream
anyone wanna buy my 67' ?
we're going to talk further tomarrow about it

well i was close to the price guess....
Dear Leadfoot,
Vanning histrory... yes its been an amazing time having this van. So many amazing stories... So many intresting people have come and gone... and some have stayed in really inportant ways... all in some way conected to the van. People really take in an intense way with a ART CAR / VAN... "oh you made that" and this kinda stuff. Lets say $6000.00, as I shared with you I've put in, a bit over $11,000.00 over this time and in my life I'd say it's been enriched by the whole relationship $111,000.00 easy! So it's time for someone else to pick up the Altered States / The Tattoo Machine Torch! And like my predecdessor Ken I'd like it to be someone with a real passion for the vanning way of life hear in the U.S. The photos are on the way. On this end I have recived a lot of calls, from intrested persons no bites yet, but its infront of my home in one of the wierdist towns in all of america. Gary, IN, I love it here...

we once knew a van named Altered States
to prevent any traumatic impact of viewing.. please scroll down slowly..and click off if any tremors or hot flashes develope viewing these pics below... i am almost speachless... almost
... i still see a sweet old show van under all them toons
ok... now i warned ya.. scroll down at your own risk
now you have met... tattoo machine
here are more close ups.. http://s133.photobucket.com/albums/q69/leadfoot1965/altered%20states/
i see zip ties on the headlights and cracks in the tail lights
at least the zip ties match the plate mounting ones i guess
alive and ugly is better than dust and rust anytime
but i'm expecting a fresh paint job with the next owner
hope it finds a good home... no way to fund this ride here

Good Gawd!! Like you said, better painted weird then rusted out. Is this thing a no-door? One pic it looks like it, then another,it doesn't.
Thanks for sharing Eric. Brad

Scooby-f***ing-Doo. If I never see another S/D themed van, it will be too soon. How original. duh. Maybe I am just too freaking old. Sorry guys, but there isn't much about this van that I can find to like. But, to each his own, I reckon.

I will donate a gallon of Hot Rod Black primer to who ever buys this van.........

That would explain the owner making the comment... "People really take in an intense way with a ART CAR / VAN... "oh you made that" and this kinda stuff"

Not that it's my bag either, but at least they did a decent job with the artwork. It could be ALOT worse..

it's been a bunch of years since Ken built it
-anyway.. got an email from a drive-by vanner who got some better pics today.. thank you for the recon mission and pics!
he reports back this
""have to admit that it is in better shape than I expected. The body has held up quite well, except the passenger corner of the roof is caved in like someone sat on it. There are a few SMALL cracks and bubbles here and there, but it would win trophies as it sits. The interior is full to the roof of boxes and crates and crap, but I could see what appeared to be crushed velvet in a couple colors (maybe gold and green?) Maybe the original interior? The dash is also velvet, then covered with a lovely leopard print fur. I took a bunch of pics...I am attaching them to an e mail for you. If it wasn't for the scooby situation, 5000 might be a good price. I thought the back window was convex? It is now concave. All the mold work around the bays is nearly perfect and crackless The reverse shifter is there on the motorbox. If it runs as good as it looks, its an OK van. i forgot to write down the odometer reading...I think it was 69,000. I didn't talk to Eric, just pulled up, shot pics and left."""

Looks like its parked in front of Herman Munsters house..........

Yes, It could be allot worse. All of the sheet metal body mods look like they are holding up good.Considering the amount of time this van has spent setting outside. The last time I personally saw the vanat a van event was the late 80's.........

I had the pleasure of working on Altered States when Eric first brought it. It came to my house a few times the first year Eric owned it. I hung new front doors & did a few other things to it. He brought it by once after he started painting it. YES it was different to say the least!!! I has a lot of costume body work done to it.

04-09-2007, 05:03 AM
yo lf, any idea why there are concrete blocks in front of the tires? john

04-09-2007, 05:49 AM
someone suggested one was for ebrake the other is theft prevention
.. my guess is the parking sprag is busted on the AT or he is just makin sure it down roll out of the driveway
-thanks taz, i heard you supplied the doors and technical assistance when he got it
did you get the old ones or did he take em?

04-09-2007, 06:57 AM
Barney and scooby in the same van yikes !!!! first set of pictures and second set don;t jive . first set seams to be older second set also looks like the lower purple has been re done in the second set ?? also no zip ties air dam looks to be fixed and no dent in roof ???? Ken

04-09-2007, 07:39 AM
first set of pics were snail mailed and scanned
second set was an undercover vanner who gave the van a drive by photo shoot
am calling the owner direct this afternoon for some answers..
i think i'm going to have to pass on it but wish i didn't have to, all depends on what he says later today
