So, I'm back on road, and annoyed at clunking front end. Put her up on jack stands and to my surprise the spring shackle on the right front leaf was busted! After taking it all apart I discovered someone had welded both shackles on that side, some 25yrs ago before I bought it. Once I got all the shackles (from '80's K series truck) and bushings (from CJ5 jeep) I wondered if there is supposed to be a splash shield near the spring shackle on the right side? There's one on the drivers side right next to shackle on that side but I don't know if the mystery welder just removed the right side to make it easier to get bolts out. Anyone willing to crawl under there let me know. It would prevent water kicking up towards starter in the rain. Thanks.

OK, here's a thought- the two splash shields are essentially mirror images of each other, and all straight breaks. you could make a cardboard template and fab one up or have a sheetmetal shop make one. It could even be bent up on the edge of a workbench, not as clean but functional. Most of these pieces are gone now due either to rust or impatient mechanics.Gregg Groff

I'm embarrased to say, I was one of those impatient mechanics long ago, when I tossed all that stuff, including the main center piece. Now I regret it. Oh well! --- TVKeep one foot in the gutter, one fist in the gold...sigpic

I'm equally embarrased to say that I'm a bit of a pack rat, and hardly ever throw anything away! ( I still have the broken exhaust manifold from my 70 that I had brazed up, even tho I got two good ones from Dan[gotavan] who is even a bigger pack rat than me!)Gregg Groff

I took mine off 4 years ago when I did something under the front end and haven't put them back on yet, But to get rid of them,,,,,, not on a bet. They'll go back eventually, but overheating isn't problem in any way, shape, or form, so I haven't bothered with them. But I can go to the garage and have them in my hands in a minute. But yes, I do get a little uncomfortable whenever anybody gets an incling to clean the garage,,,,,,,,

Who you callin pack rat? Thats all good stuff I drag home from the dump when Ma isn't lookin. Just cause my barns are full and the vans are too I gotta pile stuff outback. I think I need a couple more vans thats all. Anybody need a couple hunderd bikes. A few years ago I took 4 vans to the junkyard, now I wish I had 'em back. They crushed everything in there even the good junk! Bastages. Now I'm on a mission to get all the Chevy vans away from the crusher around here. Dan

I never had a van with a cover back of the crossmember on the starter side, just the front ones. I didn't even know it was gone. It sure would get in the way for starting with a screwdriver (shorting across the selenoid) though. I did have to make a heat shield for the starter on the 327 van, the headers baked it on long trips. There back on subject. Greg that brass manifold is a work of art hang on wall. Andy the stingrays are everywhere ya just gotta look, millions were made and most were trashed now the trashers are lookin for a replacement. There are repops. (yeegghh) I picked up a RamHorn fastback stick shift that just had flat tires out of a trash pile. Dan

Well, I have come across afew other chopper style bikes in my day: A western Auto Buzz Bike, a Raleigh Chopper, a Ross Apollo, but I've never stumbled upon a Stingray. I have an off-brand Stingray clone in my sister's garage right now, but the chrome on it is wasted, so I doubt I can save it. If you have any restorable bikes with stick-shifts, I'd be interested in them. They were really before my time (I'm a BMX kid), but it's cool to have something to ride to the snack bar at the Drive-In.
Later,
Andy.
