View Full Version : Doors cracked by hinges

What's the best way to fix those cracks around the front door hinges? (on the door)
I tried jacking up the door and welding it, but it really needs to be in the closed position to put the right kind of pre-load on it before welding.
Maybe take the door off and put it into some kind of special jig to simulate it being bolted to the van?
TacoVan needs a "door job" real bad (among many other things)
Any ideas? --- TV

Funny you should ask. I had the same problem with my doors too. I opted to have them TIG welded at a local shop. It worked great. I marked the spots that were cracked and they did the welding. I brought them home and dressed all the welds. The catch is the price. I spent about three hundred bucks getting six doors welded. But I figured it was worth it to have nice doors that swing properly and don't sag or make noise. And you can't even tell they were ever cracked in the first place.

My old 69 had 1/8" plates welded in over the hinge area, under the bolts. Not original looking, but very solid.
