Easy! The stud on the alternator hooks to battery positive, just like the old alt. On the small plug, the thicker wire goes to battery positive thru the ignition (so as not to drain battery when engine is off) you can hook it up to any lead that is hot when key is on except the one going to the coil as it is hooked up thru a resistor. The smaller wire in the plug hooks up to the idiot light in your dash.

I've hooked up modern altenators in all kinds of old cars (even tractors) before

It's simple.........get a one wire GM altenator they are available everywhere.

Hook up the wire to the batery

as far as the regulator on the doghouse, get a big hammer and just keep bashing it until you feel better. Or you can unbolt it and throw it away. Or you can chrome it and use it as a conversation piece. At any rate, it's no longer needed!
