    Side Door Latch parts needed

I need the spindle (splines on one end and square hole on the other) and the piece that goes behind the outside handle (PN 3850799).
Can anyone help me out here? I've been reduced to using a screwdriver to open the side door.
Also, I could use some of those little clips that hold the vertical rods onto the latch assy.
    Thanks --- TV

bellvan, thanks a lot, I might just take you up on that.
sambowie, that picture is for the front door latch, I need parts for the side/rear cargo door latches, like in bryan corbitt's website (see Parts Dept: Door Handles)
Actually, I just checked out his site again, and his '68 parts are different from my '65.
The older spindle is longer, and engages the rotating plate differently. The newer design looks more durable. Am I correct about this? --- TV

I don't think the earlier van latches are much different than the later ones. Although there are a couple different styles. As for the Ebay link, the latch shown there is from a newermodel truck or van. I just spent a day in the junkyard and thats one of the parts I got. The spindle shaft is somewhat shorter than the early van but it should work. I haven't installed mine yet, but I will do so and let you know how it works.

Weel I couldn't wait for tomorrow so I went and put the mechanism in the door. The bolt pattern is perfect and the spindle is shorter, but it comes throught the door panel the same distance as the window regulator spindle. Which means that there is a handle that will fit it and now we can all start pulling the latch mechanisms out of newer vans. Wonder what else will cross over???

Wow, I spent Monday afternoon at the junkyard, too! It turned out to be a crash course in side-door-latch-ology.
The older vans use the longer spindle, with a smaller diameter spline, and must be paired with the older setscrew-type handles.
'67 and up uses the shorter spindle, with a larger diameter spline, and must be paired with the newer clip-on handles.
Both types of spindle are crimped, or swaged, into a "double-D"-shaped opening in the rotating plate that pulls the latch into the door. Herein lies the cause of the dreaded "droops": the spindle works loose in the plate (they should have welded it), becoming more sloppy over time. Trying to open the door when it's locked aggravates the problem. The spindle is soft, and is worn down by the heat-treated plate, the square-section spring that rubs against it, and the bore that it turns in.
All the rest of the parts seem to hold up pretty well, so it makes sense to try to repair the bad spindle and re-attach it firmly to the plate.
What I plan to do is build up the worn spindle areas with weld, form a new double-D end to fit into the plate, and weld it on, after making sure the outside handle will be level when the latch is closed. --- TV

                HI TV,
I have some door parts off of my 66 panel van. Why don't you come on over and get what you need. If you drive the turbo-van it should only take a few minutes. If you don't come I guess that I will see what I have for you unless you have scored some already. Give me an e-mail and we can work out the deal.
