    Prunella

One of our charter members, Al Furnish (New Mexico), bought his '65 Sportvan in February 1967. This photo was taken 2 days after they bought it:

Prunella has seen the family grow steadily over the past 40+ years. Here is the Furnish family in 2005, at Al and his wife's 50th wedding anniversary:

I just received an email from him. He hasn't been on the site in many years, but still drives Prunella all the time.

    right on!

In 1968 my folks bought a Brand New, Chevrolet Belair Station wagon.

w/fold up, rear facing seat. I was 7.

I loved that car. I sat in the back and watched the world go by.

    long live Prunella.

Hi guys! My name is Matt Furnish. I'm the 4th from the left in the 2nd picture (I got rid of my bowl cut a long time ago). I just wanted to say that Al Furnish, my grandfather will be passing down the van to me within a few months. I'm really excited to keep the van in the family. I'll make sure Prunella continues to roll down the street, as she was intended to!

    Welcome to our family!!!!

Welcome to our family Matt! What plans do you have for Prunella, i.e. wheels, stereo, paint? Maybe she doesn't need anything and you can just get in and go! Have you been able to get some newer photo's?

Thanks for the welcome. The paint is actually in great condition. Most of the work that will need to be done will be minor electrical fixes on the dashboard, interior work. I'd like to keep it as original as possible. Here is the latest picture of her taken early in the summer to get a new starter and carb. It has an I-6 from a '71 Chevy, so it can haul ass.

I know it. I've loved that van since I was a kid. I learned how to drive stick in that van when I was 15. I broke the linkage and my grandfather had to drive it home in first gear the whole way. I blame it on my sister- who drove it for the first time right before me. The linkage was promptly fixed on the driveway within 15 minutes.

So I know it's been a while since I gave you all an update, but I finally brought her to her new home. Since she hasn't been driven that much the past couple of years I decided to have her moved professionally. I went with reliable carriers. Their service was fast and great. I drove down to Los Alamos to help load the van. I chuckled when the other cars in the trailer were a Porsche and a Jaguar. Non the less, the van arrived in style, in an oversize semi truck.

Loading the van up, the driver was surprised to hear the van had 288k miles on it, and that it started right up. (Apparently the Jaguar took 5 hours to load onto the truck because it would not start).

I thought Smiley would appreciate this, which was on the back of one of the photos

I also have my grandfather's charter membership certificate from '98!

Prune as 288k miles on her. She is on her 2nd engine from a '71 pickup which as been rebuilt since. Here is where she has been

It looks better on paper than on GPS

Is that still the original paint?

That is an outstanding van, I wouldn't change a thing (other than maintenance)

It was repainted in the early 80's. My grandfather did a lot of modifications to the van throughout the years. I'll keep it looking as original as possible.

I have my uncle's 65 Ducati. First bike I ever got a ride on.

Some things are worth more than money. I wish you many good years and good times with your grandfather's van!

I love everything about Prunella, especially her long history....great story. I somehow feel all the photos of her should be in black and white... I don't know why, but there is something intriguing about her in black and white photos that is totally lost in a color photo.
