    Let the Wild Rumpus Start!

I've been wanting to get a 1st gen for awhile now.....ever since Smiley brought his '66 (the one that started this club) home from Mac's house. And I've finally gotten one! Now, I didn't know how to drive it when it got here....but a week later....I'm doing ok....kinda....sorta...ok....i've only driven it 3x. And it didn't realize that you have to push down the clutch AND brake when you start it or else it'll lurch forward like that possessed car in the Stephen King novel.

Anyway....here goes with my picture thread!

    • the driver's window won't roll up AT ALL....i don't know if the driver tried to roll it down & wasn't gentle enough OR if the ride was just too much for a 48 year old metal frame.... I guess I'll never know.

Love it!! time for fun. I'm a little puzzled that you have to keep your foot on the brake when starting, sounds like the clutch is mis-adjusted cause when the pedal is pushed all the way down, the van shouldn't move at all when the engine is starting or running. Keep at it, you'll get it.

Try driving a stick shift early with a cast on your right leg. I did it back in the late '70's after a knee operation. I moved the seat way back so I could get my right foot on the gas (cast stopped at my ankle). Had to use my Left leg & foot to work the clutch and the brake. You quickly discover that the steering wheel column is in the way when using one foot for both clutch and brake.

aimee, you be fine with the tree on the tree, after a while you'll be driving with heels(hehehe) Seriously just go out by your self and drive and before long it will seem like second nature. Also remember eariles are like lay's potato chips "you just can't have just one" Bob

I had to drive my 69 with a broken collarbone and my right arm in a sling. Rest elbow on leg, grab shifter near base, move arm with leg.

Van looks great. I would bet that you will have to form a line for buyers for "Deflowered", if that time comes. Amie, do you realize that you are probably the only female in the world driving around in a 1st gen Chevy van.

Greg, I believe we have at least one other female member here (9ballexpress? Someone correct me if I'm wrong) who also has a yellow first gen? I seem to remember meeting her at some point during the haze that was the 35th Nats...of course I could be wrong. Don't remember too much about that one except for the puking LOL.

I bought it from Richard/Todd....a grandfather/grandson.....Smiley doesn't think the boy ever really drove it...it's a SOB to drive in the state it's in.... but it IS pretty.....

Todd bought it from Russ....He WAS on the site....and went to the C of C in CA with it a couple of years ago....66beachcrusier interacted with him the most...

maybe it's not the carb after all....

so...last night smiley & i changed out the fan belt & plugs....old ones were gaped wrong.... and then, while trying to figure out where the vac leak might be coming from, discovered.....

the vac advance wasn't hooked up....on either end.

.....TWR seemed to be running a little better. I'm still having trouble with the 3 speed. Apparently it's a "granny" clutch, coupled with the 4.11 = not so easy to learn on. Smiley has me doing "clutch" exercises....to "find the sweet spot". (insert jokes here). Since it's a panel & I'm used to a sportvan, I decided to take down the curtains so I can see around me. Makes me a little more confident. I'm getting there.

next up....fix the driver's side window so it can open.....and get rid of the push button starter.

Smiley needs to call me. I had to figure out the vac advance problem as well. Assuming you have the hei distributor, the carter YF (at least my 4339) had to be modified to work, and it does. 262-271-5858

Its got a push button starter? Cool

    assesssment after the weekend.....

    • I DO need a new carb.
    • I need a new clutch.
    • Need 5 more people to committ to buying brackets from M1D.
    • I need a 3.36 that will work with a 12 bolt differential.
    • plus all the rest!

I did get out and drive TWR around.....that clutch needs to be changed out. I can't even decide if I want to keep it 3 on tree or switch bc it's IMPOSSIBLE to make an assessment.

    Transmission

Keep the three on the tree! Once you get used to it, you will like the added control you have over the engine with it. At least it is a synchronized one, my 67 Dodge A108 three speed isn't. I truly enjoy driving my '66 Chevy after getting out of the Dodge.

    thanks.....

I named my van "the wild rumpus"....and from the way it drives with the crappy clutch it came with, it makes sense.....but today i'm thinking of "girl-a-fying" it. TWR or deflowered....not sure which one.

    so i didn't girl-a-fy my van....i got under it.

i spent my WHOLE DAY OFF digging around the dog house and under the van....and online. I discovered that i had a problem after I found out that carter yf carbs are engine specific.
    http://www.vcvc.org/showthread.php/2...-year-specific

    I have a 4073s on....which is specific to a '66 manual 194/230.

we had never been able to find out for sure what size engine was in it.....couldn't get to the numbers. Smiley has been thinking it's a 194 since that's what came standard in '65.

the engine number listed the "protect - o - plate" is listed as F0813SK.
I dug around and finally....after multiple attempts, was able to get the stamped engine number: 3850817 which is a a 230. (see link for casting number search engine below pic).

    http://www.castingnumbers.info/site/search/3837012

    So, the block said it was a 230 .... BUT the '65 info didn't list a 230....only a 194 in most of the documentation...but I had this.....

    AND then....
Well...then I stumbled upon a goldmine of sorts!!

(I'll upload the entire document later......)

BINGO!!??? Wait....there's no SK listed under 1965....but it IS listed under '66....and then I remembered....the 230 was an option!!

So using the 1975 GM Parts book, I was able to decipher the code in the protect-o-plate: F0813SK
    F=Flint
    0813=August 13th
    SK=g10 230 six.

ta-da! engine & carb mystery solved! (3975s 230 engine (van) original equipment manual trans 1965).

oh, oh....that protect-o-plate has MORE numbers & codes! To be continued.....

Really hard to name that little van, for a girl.
#1 "Emerald Princess", but your to tough for the princess part.
#2 "Mississippi Queen", but you live in the wrong state.
#3 "Delta Dawn", but then you would have to wear a green dress, and paint a faded rose on the van.
#4 "Green Eyed Lady", but I have no clue what color your eyes are.
#5 "Stoned Toad", would be my first pick, with a big lady bull frog on the back doors sucking on a magic pipe in the shade of a big mushroom.

ok....I'll share the Rosetta Stone in the Part's forum until I can get it into the tech section.

Nice find on finding the info to decode those numbers. Big favor...Any chance you can find this on that same book? "F02120S" I've never been able to find the OS identification.

Actually it's unit #60 off the assembly line for 1965. Sequence number starts with 100001. My new 65 has sequence # 115323 so it's the 15,322nd van off the line for 65. My black van is in the high 3x,xxx's so it's a very late 65, almost a 66.

66beachcruiser: your casting number is 3921968 = 230 CID, 250 CID, Chevrolet, Oldsmobile . (I found it in this thread: http://www.vcvc.org/showthread.php/1...l-specifically)

I'm still looking for the OS in your "F02120S".

Are you sure it's not SS?

I only found this but I'm still looking.
