    Fuel Sender

    The FG 117A is a great direct install for the 2nd gen vans as long as you have the adapter to go from the 3/8" inverted flare to 5/16" barbed (Dorman 785-404). There was a better one available from NAPA but I've misplaced the part #. (Anyone have that?).

    Fuel Problems

    I have never seen more fuel issues on the same van. It's probably one reason it was parked. From back to front;
    Wrong gas cap caused fuel tank to pressurize (or cause vacuum) and keep pressure on the system. Result, flooding when parked, restricted when ran a while.
    Pick up tube in tank rotted away. Only half of it left. Pick up sock disintegrated and small pieces of it moving through to carburetor. Result, starving for fuel with less than half a tank depending on how much sloshed fuel reached remaining end of pick up tube. Intermittent carburetor flooding from fuel sock debris landing between needle and seat.
    Bad fuel pump. It leaked intermittently from vent hole in the side. It would always start up without leaking but drive it a while and it would blow fuel out of the side of the pump. Made the pump look new being regularly gas washed. Result, starved for fuel when run a while.
    Carb contaminated with small pieces of nearly clear carb sock pieces. Result, carburetor overflows and floods. Also, when overhauling carburetor, you say "So where's the contamination"?
    Hopefully the fuel issues are dealt with.

    Working On It

    I have been spending some serious time on this van. I hope to post up some before and after pics soon in the hope of interesting a buyer. I currently see no major flaws in this 108 Display Van except that there is no clear title. DANG IT! The plan was always to find a good home for this van. Since I currently have 7 VCVs, it may be time to cut 1 or 2 of them loose. The wiring on this van is a remaining issue I need to resolve before it is truly a daily driver. Anyone interested in display vans, please PM me, thanks!

    Update

    This project has moved forward some in between several other VCVan projects. On this display van, after repairing the fuel system issues, I found an oil leak at the intake manifold. The manifold was removed, cleaned and detailed some. Carburetor overhauled, kick down cable replaced, and a few other small items. I spent way too much time running around finding some of the small parts that were missing but it seems that's always the case. Anyway, the van starts right up now and settles down to a nice idle with no issues.

    I still have some things to do on this project and I'm hoping to get them done this year. If not, then next year. Notice the switch near the valve cover? That's the power for the ignition. The wiring is wasted and I want to re-wire the van before it's listed.

    Progress Update: There she sits

    I'm looking back on this original post and it's been almost 5 years since I pulled this one home! Where does the friggin time go? I'm thinking I need to do a little more on this and list it on eBay. Too many projects are in front of this G20. If memory serves, this biggest issue that I know of with this display van is that the transmission has a slow leak. Other than that, I think this baby is ready for a road test. (Dude! Wake up and smell the coffee! It's been ready for that for a looong time.) I always liked this van but to be honest, I like em all. I remember getting the bugs outta this one and then got distracted with the intake manifold detail work. Lets see, trans leak, tires and a road test to say, Canada maybe? No, how about Minnesota?
