    Repopped: Transmission Linkage Bushing

Offered for sale; Transmission linkage bushings. I believe the original bushing (grommet) is part #3854838. Fits 1st and 2nd gen. Two required per vans equipped with manual transmission. One required for vans with automatic transmission.

These are located midway between the steering gear mounted shift linkage and the transmission levers as shown in this illustration. Some first gen vans have a different mount for these bushings so please check your van before ordering.
    .

Colors will vary and can not be chosen at this time. 1 bushing $10 plus shipping. 2 bushings $20 plus shipping. 4 Bushings $35 including shipping. PayPal preferred. Shipped from Sacramento California.

These bushings should help tighten up shifting and make shifts more positive. This bushing is one of several points in the shift linkage that can cause loose or sloppy shift feel. The original units were a phenolic type material which broke and then fell off. In all my years of hunting vans, I have only seen one partial bushing from which I made these repopped units. The one I found was so brittle that it broke several times from just me cleaning it even after I knew how fragile it was. These repopped bushings should last many years with little or no servicing. You should apply a dry lube like Dry Slide or similar on initial installation.
To install, remove linkage connection at transmission after marking original position. Lift up now free transmission link rod, install bushing and replace link rod to original position and tighten. Depending on how much play is already on these two link rod arms, you may be able to install one or both by just lifting up the rods and inserting the bushing.

It's hard to see even where these bushings are but they should snap into place when properly installed.

A special thanks to Lucky Chuck for his invaluable assistance on this project.

    PM me if interested.
    Thanks!

My linkage feels pretty loose and tends to get stuck in first or second gear and I need to reach into the brake reservoir and move the linkage back and forth to get back into neutral. Would these bushings fix that problem?

    Not Sure

Tough to say what is causing that issue. Several other moving parts in that system. First I would try adjusting the linkage at transmission.

With trans selector lever in neutral, mark original position of linkage at trans then loosen nut holding shift link rod near trans so rod can slide, install guide pin in slot at lower shift linkage bolted on steering gear, place both levers at trans in mid seated position, tighten nuts, remove guide pin and check for improvement.

Sorry if that description is not clear. A better adjustment description would include pics. It's probably a good subject for a tutorial in the "Doghouse" section of the forum.
    Best wishes.

Your issue is primarily the bushings at either end of the shift linkage; at the trans and at the steering column levers. That's where the play comes in that lets the shift rods hang up between gears.

    Update

It seems as though these bushings do fit all 1st and 2nd gen vans. I wasn't sure about some of the early 1st gen vans but it seems they fit them also.

To simplify the cost, a set of 2 bushings will be $35 shipped. I had to upgrade the mailer since the cheaper plain envelope with padding was just getting too beat up. The cost for 4 bushings will remain $45 shipped. I'm working with Lucky Chuck and others to make other parts that will allow for improved shifting. Any feedback from members on suggested improvements is appreciated. Thanks!

    Response

When I was on my cross-country run, I had many requests for these waiting for me. I responded to all that I was out of town. When I got back and followed up on the requests, many did not respond back. I've only a few sets left so I'm sending them out in the order requested. I'll wait a while longer for those that have not responded and then send out what I have left to those that did respond. I'm just trying to be fair about this. I should also post up a tutorial on shift linkage play. These bushings are just one part of tightening up the shift linkage.
