Offered for sale-Front Door Latch Repair Patches.
The front doors of our vans have several problems. One of them is the sheet metal around the door latch area will crack and fatigue. This causes the latch to become loose and slip out of place. Worn hinges cause the doors to sag resulting in misalignment of the latch.
This passenger side latch doesn't look so bad until you give it a little push.
The driver's side on my 69 was repaired with a hand made piece that was welded onto the outside of the door latch area.
With the help of Lucky Chucky, we have developed an improved repair patch piece that can be used to help strengthen this area.
Attachment 30991
The piece can be screwed down over the top of the existing latch area and then welded in place. The piece should not be placed inside the door as it will cause the latch to change it's position on the door. The patch is 16 gauge CRS which should allow for easy welding in place with either the GTAW or GMAW process (Tig or Mig). Stick welding is not recommended. In a pinch, you could also just place this patch over the top of the damaged area and fasten it down with screws. This particular method is not recommended as a permanent solution, welding in place is preferred.
A single repair piece can be used on either the driver or passenger door.
Specify 1st or second gen door as they are slightly different and not interchangeable. You may wish to countersink the holes on the patch piece prior to installation for a tighter fit. You will likely be able to reuse the original screws as they should have plenty of length.
