    Roof Rail Sealer

    After I get all the old scraped out and the rust spots taken care of,
    what has anyone used for sealing the rail?
    3M 08505 Fast and Firm?

    No suggestions? So, another project to chronicle.
    Since nobody has ever done this.

    As I scrape and fix I will post more pics. I found a self-leveling seam seal from 3M
    08307 or the 08531 heavy Drip-Check.
    Either should work.

    You have to do this

    If your van has never had the rail scraped out and been redone
    GET IT DONE.

    Step one done

    Like I posted before...Your van has to have this done.
    The roof is trying to rust itself off the top.
    I was fortunate enough to only find a handful of places the crap ate thru.
    The 50 year old sealer was still a little flexible but only took a slight push with a screwdriver and it was loose.

    If the rail was trimmed...right here...would the water run down the pillar and not into the
    windshield gasket? Yes, that is the worst spot I found...

    That's what I went through last year with my 108 but mine was in way worse shape. Went through a lot of POR 15 converter, glass cloth and then bondo to make it pretty. I had so much rust you would have been chasing it forever if you tried to patch in new metal, it really needed a full donor roof cut at the window columns if you were doing a full restoration. On top of the black POR15 I used their grey primer, then their bright white top coat. I bought some rail sealer to finish it up but didn't get to squirting it in there before I sold the van. If you want I can dig around and find the tube. I think it was 3M.

    So the spots rusted thru have been welded closed.

    Nice work!

    When I lived in WA, I had water coming through the roof drip rail into the side doors on the wikivan every time it would rain. I looked around my shop and used what I had, which was concrete crack sealer. I ran a bead in the roof gutter and smoothed it with my finger. Probably not the "right" product to use, but it sealed everything up nicely and no more leaks, lol

    I suppose being in the desert-ish has saved this problem from getting a lot worse.
    Your van deserves this..

    After the welding I went back along the edge and scraped absolutely all of the sealer out
    and took about an hour straightening the rail itself.

    Not to be a Danny Downer but have you thought about what is lurking beneath that windshield sealer? My 108's windshield was totally stained by rust washing down over it for who knows how long. It had a bunch of some type of black silicone sealer put in where the factory rubber was not tight to the sheet metal. I dug all that silicone out and used a screwdriver and little metal pick tools I got from HF to scrape out as much rust as I could. Then I taped off the factory rubber and windshield etc. and POR 15'd the crap out of the gap. Then resealed it with black gasket maker. The real fix would of course have been to remove the windshield and cut out and replace the rusted metal, then install a new windshield as mine was cracked. But that will be the new owner's project some day, it's sealed up pretty good for a while.
