Trouble getting side door to lock

I have been having issues forever trying to get the side doors to lock. Keys and cylinder work. I have looked at the thread for Lock pawls, and I have done some suggested fixes; added a rubber hose to enlarge part that is suppose to turn the mechanism.
But, nope, it's still too stiff to turn by key to lock. But the mechanism will move by hand? Do I need a whole new mechanism?
So to you who know how to remedy this, please inform the one who doesn't know, me. Need help...
    Thanks

I know that on mine, if the handle isn't turned all the way down(closed completely)my lock won't work.

So make sure your handle is turned all the way counterclockwise, then try it.

Thanks very much! Also thanks to Mark for giving me some tips too. I believe I will try to lube and loosen the mechanism up and it may be fixable.
I think if I just have patience, and the help of knowledgeable friends, I will have locking side and back doors. I always want it NOW... but nothing is that way. You would think after years of seeing that, I would have changed? Hmmm something else to work on.

I went through this on my 68 camaro. The lock mechanism was dirty from 50 years of neglect and was actually stuck locked and I could not open the passenger door for about a week. I finally got it loose, took the assembly out of the door, and soaked the whole assembly overnight in Chem-dip carb cleaner. The next day, I scrubbed it with a wire brush, then dried it, and finally lubed it with white lithium grease. It now operates smoothly and doesn't get stuck. Could be your door lock assembly needs the same treatment.

Yes, I think you are right. I did just squirt some lithium into the area... but I think a good soak and really a good lube
    will do it!

I hope to see you this Sunday!

Thanks Russell. Sunday at the Vans and Coffee, Rich said he would help me fix the mechanisms,
He has knowledge like you do, about most van things, unlike myself. All the information in the thread is great, I had not seen it before. I am sure soon I will be locking my doors...

When Mac and I rebuilt my van, we went through EVERY nut and bolt. With the doors, we cleaned and greased several components of the door latch. It took a little work with the mechanism out of the door. I don’t think it can be done thoroughly while it’s in the door. Works like new now.
