    Thumbs up Wikivan rust repair

    Hey Gang,

The ol wikivan has had rust at the top passenger side corner of the windshield since I bought her. Its just got worse and worse over the 12 years I have owned this van. So I finally attacked the rust and welded in some new metal.. Here's some pics of the project as it goes.

    During:

Even the inner structure was rotted, so I cut out and replaced the section where the sun visor attaches. I will need to come back with a hole saw and open it up to install the visor. The factory did not drill these holes because the passenger side visor was an option that many vans did not come with.

I got the replacement metal from a donor van from Whadaguy in Arizona. Anyone remember him? He hasn't posted on here in years. I finally am getting around to replacing this metal.

Here it is just test fitted. No welding yet.

The fitment was good, so I welded it up.

After grinding the welds down, its looking pretty good. Should only require a skim coat of filler to finish it off.

A full paint job is a long way off.. for now, the goal was just to repair the rust, and then cover with primer and rattle can the repaired area so I can put a new windshield. After this project, the focus will be swapping in a 292!

This is great! I'm in the same boat, so it's encouraging to see someone who clearly knows what they're doing tackle it first. I probably won't be lucky enough to find a donor for patches, so I'll likely end up having to fabricate my own.

    Done

    Well, its all finished!

Although I am still looking for a closer match for the original yellow-orange paint of the wiki-van. Everything I find is yellow. Anyway, here is the finished repair.

it used to be a really bright orange.

Here is an old pic of the wiki-van driven by the old man who owned it prior to me.
